Walks and Hikes
For currently available walks and hikes please see my Picatic events page here.
Here are some examples of popular walks below.
Moonlight Madness: a circuit of the Dartmoor hills around Fernworthy and Teign Head. |
Moonlight Madness.
A night walk on the high moor. Timed to take place on a Friday as close to the full moon as possible.
Around 7 miles over four hours should allow for a comfortable
pace and time to soak up the atmosphere.
This is a "moderate" graded walk. This means it takes place mostly on paths although there may be sections that are pathless. There may be some river crossings of ankle depth but there will normally be places to jump and stones to hop across can usually be found.
On the way we'll pass stone circles, standing stones, ancient hut circles and get to see Dartmoor when the night shift is at work.
Group size is capped at 10 to ensure a memorable experience for all.
(bring a torch)
Hill walking can require some exertion and agility. If you have a health condition that impacts on either of these then please contact me by e-mail to check suitability prior to booking.

Mines, Moors and Monks.
A 3 hour guided walk around the dramatic and fascinating landscape of North East Dartmoor in the area to the north of the Warren House Inn. The walk will take in historic ruins spanning 4 thousand years of life on the moor. We will cover between 5 and 7 miles.
We start and finish close to the Warren House Inn should you wish to have a well earned lunch.

To The Heart of the North Moor
This is a 5-6 hour day out to relish the wild and remote nature of Dartmoor. The emphasis of the trip is to enjoy the walk and the isolated setting rather than focus too much on the historic or cultural elements of the landscape although there will be plenty of that too.
The route will pass between the sources of the East and West Dart, past mine works and peat cuts (if time allows we might take in the odd aircraft crash site). To reach the destination of Cut Hill and Fur Tor. This is about as far as you can get from a public road in southern England. We will cover between 11 and 15 miles
The nature of this day out is that we will focus on the objective, bad weather will mean that we may need to detour some of the river crossings to safer locations so the duration of the walk may increase and the terrain crossed may then be sub optimal.

Moonlight, Mines, Mayhem and Mystery
This trip is another Friday evening trip, usually timed to be as close to the full moon as possible. A 2 and a half hour circuit of the area south and east of the Warren house inn. taking in mines, bronze age, medieval and neolithic sites with historic and legendary tales of the area. Starting and finishing close to the Warren House Inn the option for a post walk drink and chat by the fire makes this a great alternative to most Friday night's out. This walk has a maximum of fifteen tickets. Dogs are welcome but due to deep mine workings, livestock and roads I have to insist that they remain on leads.
